Sustainable pieces created for product eternity

Mario Tsai Studio was founded in 2014 out of his vision to create elegant, contemporary furniture and conceptual lightning based on a research-centered approach.
Every piece starts with an exploration of materials which results in new production methods based on the restrictions and possibilities of those materials. Mario Tsai’s pieces are not influenced by trends from the past or the future but he leaves the materials and their characteristics define new pieces. Testing new materials like hollow aluminium combined with an I-beam like support system resulted in his Gongzheng Series. The pieces are extra long, stretching the limits of the length of a table but at the same time being lightweight.
He describes his works as “mild minimalism”, focussing on the raw elements and eliminating all that is not essential. Designers need to be able to think independently, which he showcased on his Electricity Light, where the illusion is created of an electric current flowing independently from any conduit. This is possible through the use of a newly developed LED technology.
Sustainability is one of the main pillars of his studio which he implements during the entire lifecycle of a product, from creation to disposal, wanting to develop a product eternity. His Mazha Lighting System is designed to be able to replace a broken piece instead of being forced to replace the whole system.
Tsai latest exhibition Poetic Light is showcased in Hangzhou as from July 2020.
