Sculptural items made from three-dimensional tiles by Max Lamb & Kwangho Lee

Tajimi Custom Tiles was created as a platform to develop unique, innovative and custom-tailored tiles. The company is based in Tajimi City which is the historic center of the Japanese tile industry. To celebrate the launch of this platform, the company asked Max Lamb and Kwangho Lee to create experimental objects using local materials and production methods to show the potential and the beauty of Tajimi tiles. ‘Working Tile’ is Max’s collection of modular, three-dimensional tiles that can generate countless shapes and forms. Using a process called pressure moulding, he created four different tile designs: a flat tile, a corner tile, a curved bead tile and a sweep tile. Lamb used typical clays with earthy characteristics and special glazes with ambiguous colors that honored classic Japanese tiles. The tiles resulted in objects that take on characteristics of vases, sofas, tables, benches and partition walls. Meanwhile, Kwangho Lee drew influence from a typical production method used in Tajimi called clay extrusion. His collection called ‘Tide’, consists of a module with a section in the form of a looped line, which can be extruded to different lengths to be used in different functions. Objects are created by stacking modules horizontally or vertically. Once the modules are aligned, a repeated loop is created similar to a knitting pattern. The exhibition in Tokyo can be visited virtually as a walkable 3D tour starting on november 3, 2020.
