Mother of Pearl furniture made out of recycled plastic

Dutch startup Plasticiet latest’s collection Mother of Pearl consists of furniture pieces made out of slabs of recycled polycarbonate. The pieces are connected after each slab is molded individually. The finishing of the material is swirling and shiny, mimicking the surface of the natural material mother of pearl. This effect is created by kneading and stretching recycled plastic with a technique similar to the one used for making taffy from hot sugar. The objects are inspired by the primitive human-made stone artefacts of the Stone Age. Wanting to bring new value to recycled plastic, the Rotterdam-based duo works with plastic companies across the Netherlands. Through visits of  the plastic companies’ shredding facilities, Plasticiet wants to show that recycled plastic can compete with other high-end materials by crafting this material into pieces that allow the material to shine again. The limited-edition collection ranges from a chair, stool and a shelving design which were presented at the Collectible Design Fair in Brussels.
