Minkovska designed three futuristic birthing chairs
Stiliyana Minkovska is a London-based architect who after being inspired by her own birthing process, designed three futuristic birthing chairs creating an alternative for “hostile” hospital maternity wards.
The collection is called Ultima Thule, whose name in Latin means “a distant unknown region” or “beyond the known world”. Minkovska experienced comfort “exploring the farthest imaginable place” while giving birth, which was for her “ultima thule”.
The collection aims to offer women a relaxing, “sanctuary-like” environment during the different stages of childbirth.
The Labour Silla is designed for the initial stage of childbirth, the Parturition Stool for actual birth-giving and the Solace Chaise for the postpartum and recovery.
The designer hopes this alternative birthing suite can be used in hospitals to become the new normal. The collection of chairs was presented at the London museum, where she is one of the museum’s “designers in residence” for 2020.
