Colorful handmade papier-mâché pieces with character

Designer Polina Miliou makes unique handmade papier-mâché pieces with character created out of intuition combined with elements of intimacy, cuteness and humor. During her architecture studies at the National Technical University of Athens in Greece, she was fascinated by the scale of the human body in relation to things. Her design studio is based in Los Angeles, where she creates pieces while watching horror movies. The first papier-mâché piece she created was a pale pink side table. She started by collecting scrap paper from discarded packaging, old and recycled newspapers and magazines. Her own developed paper pulp formula is durable and flexible. Other materials she uses for the creation of her handmade pieces are repurposed wood and sculpted foam from chair structures. Color is an important part of each piece, adding personality to each character. After becoming more comfortable with the material, she started creating multicolored pieces, embracing the imperfections of the material. Every piece is unique because it was created out of its own story. The creation process starts with sculpting a shape and then adding a thick smooth layer of paper pulp followed by caressing, pampering or even slapping the piece into its final shape. Her collection consists of organic shaped chairs, macaroni- or knotted-shaped light fittings and tubular standing lamps. Her goal is to develop larger pieces, stretching the possibilities of the current materials. The designer wants to redefine this innovative durable material and use it to its full potential.
