3D printed objects made from urban waste and living mycelium

Objects from Nature is Blast Studio’s latest project of unique pieces that are mimicking nature’s shapes and 3D printed out of a material mix of urban waste and living mycelium.

The process starts with designing a geometric shape with micro-climate pockets that are adapted to the needs of living organisms and can capture humidity to protect the organism when growing. The material used is a mix of coffee waste collected in London inseminated with mycelium, the fungus’ roots. The objects are 3D printed in this material and let to grow in the dark for 16 days. The fungi will naturally grow to create a smooth and soft skin ranging from cream to brown colors.

Different pieces can be merged by letting the mycelium grow in between each piece. The pieces are finished once the mycelium is finished growing and deactivated.
